Tet offensive

When I was Up Home over christmas, my uncle gave me this pint glass. I remember seeing these when i first started going to pubs, when the Yorkshireness of Tetley was something to be proclaimed without a trace of irony and before someone in red braces decided that sticking an apostrophe 's' on the end of the brewery name would somehow improve the product.

I'm still sad that the Tetley Brewery is to shut, with production moving to Northampton. That's Northampton, the home of shoes. While in Leeds station on our way back south, I noticed that The Yorkshire Evening Post are running a campaign to keep Tetley brewed in Yorkshire, and preferably in Leeds, which is heartening. Professional Yorkshireman? Moi?

I don't think we should support that campaign at all...I think we should support a different campaign, firstly to support Copper Dragon, Taylors and a few 'proper' Yorkshire beers, and secondly to 'blackball' anything from Carlsberg!

What the YEP want (ideally) is a micro to take over at least a portion of the Leeds brewery site and continue brewing Tetley Bitter there. I'm with a Carlsberg boycott - it wouldn't be much of a chore to avoid any of their brands!

When I was home visiting my parents recently, I found an old Carling Black Label glass that my Dad had nicked when the pub he used to run closed in the 1980s. It was very evocative: I think the last time I held it, I was six years old.

So, from now on, Tetley will be from Yorkshire in the same way Stella is from Belgium, or San Miguel is from Spain...

Too little too late. The paper should have spent more time promoting real ale instead of it's wine-tasting evenings. Besides which the beer's not been worth drinking for donkeys, and whilst I was weaned on the stuff back in the day, I'm quite happy to let it go now. The county has some fantastic ale artisans producing better stuff than Tets ever managed, so let's get behind them.
