A favorite German beer of mine has long been Augustiner Edelstoff, along with Andechser and HB Helles. At the moment in Munich, you'll be looking at paying about 4 euros a half litre for any of these. If you don't mind standing, you can pay a reasonably reasonable 2.60 at the Bratwurst Glöckl am Dom , which I blogged about last August. Our Lad and me dropped in last week, astonished to find it empty except for a bloke with keys hanging off his belt who was the image of Munich comic character Alois Hingerl. Here's a little film captured on my mobile of the Glöckl's Edelstoff being served up at its fresh and delicately grassy best.

We spend quite a bit of time in Berlin (shame about the breweries here) and we always make sure we have a case of Augustiner Helles in (plus the occasional Edelstoff) as well as Rothaus Tannenzaepfle, both excellent summer beers. €3.70 is what we pay in a biergarten which is expensive compared to the UK but the pubs with gardens near us in the UK leave a lot to be desired!

I really like the Georgen Brauhaus in Berlin. I know their beers get a bit of a kicking in some bits of the internet, but I really enjoy theirs. Am I right in thinking there's now an Augustiner keller in Berlin?
I had Rothaus Tannenzaepfle for the first time last year. Loved it - and the label!
You experts on beer: I should like to ask if you have visited Bamberg? I made a few visits there some years ago and was generally blown away by the variety that is produced locally: from Weissbiers to Rauchbiers - and a load more in between that I'm not knowledgeable enough to talk about!
The service at Georghaus leaves a lot to be desired... Personally the wife and I like the beers but you have to put up with being in a bit of a touristy area. Other good small independent brewers are the Brauhaus am Spandau (a bit out of the way but well worth it) and Lindenbrau in the Sony Centre. In my original comment I was referring to the big names - Kindl and Schultheiss.
With two small kids, getting out for a beer is slightly difficult (apart from biergartens!)... but we are lucky to have a small bar nearby with Rothaus on tap - a full 8 minutes to pour a small beer. Delicious!
Affer, I've not been to Bamberg (to my shame). Intended to go on this visit but ran out of time. I know Boak And Bailey (www.boakandbailey.com) have a few recommendations on their excellent blog. (and I'm MILES from being an expert! Or should that be LITRES/PINTS from being one).
Williamandemma - We went to Lindenbrau while waiting for our train. We thought it was excellent. As an ex-muenchener i'm used to sometimes iffy service in the more 'visited' places. The staff at the Chinese Tower beergarden are the current title holders.
Plenty of decent beers in Berlin if you know where to look and I must admit I'm rather fond of Edelstoff too.
As for Bamberg and surrounds, unbeatable in Germany. I'll be there later this year hopefully.
